About MSCNMWA

Gladys Kemp Lisanby.jpg
In 1998, Gladys Kemp Lisanby was invited by Wilhelmina Cole Holladay, Founder and Chairman of the Board of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), to establish a State Committee in Mississippi. Since opening in 1987 in Washington, D.C., the National Museum has pursued the goal of bringing recognition to the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities.

Our Background

NMWA is supported, in part, by a network of State Committees. The Mississippi State Committee’s focus is on art education for young people—including both visual and performing arts—exhibitions of local artists, and the NMWA Patch Program for Girl Scouts of the USA.

Our members are known as Advisors, and all serve on the Advisory Board, along with Honorary Advisors from noted Mississippi museums and cultural venues. The governing body of the MSC is a Board of Directors with statewide representation, along with our Honorary Board members.

When the Committee was first formed, the original members were, logically and logistically, for the most part from the Gulf Coast. Today, however, membership encompasses the entire state. Several of our artists have been recognized by NMWA, and our founder served as Chair of the Advisory Board for the Museum in Washington.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), located in Washington, D.C., is the first major museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists.

NMWA is supported by a network of state and international committees, of which Mississippi is among the most active.
